Permission 04:31
Give me permission, Permission to speak Permission to be Still as the trees, Only movement of leave. Give me permission, Permission to stop Moving about, Flying around Over the ground. Show me how To slow down. Chorus: In sun I'll give you shade. In drought I'll give you rain. Shelter you from the sky I'll dance without want to fly. Sing in solitude And bow to plant my roots. Give me permission to be The tree that lives in me. Give me permission Permission to hold Seasons so cold Freezing my love In clouds above. I want permission Permission to say Everyday I will STAY. Show me how To slow down. Show me how To be found. Chorus Take the time to never call. Lay the blame on nothing at all. Did you even look to see How far I'd fall?

In early 2021, during the third New Zealand COVID lockdown, I was paralyzed. Paralyzed by the loss of friends who unfortunately went down the rabbit holes of conspiracy theories. Paralyzed by motherhood in a pandemic world, unable to travel out of New Zealand or even leave my own house.

I went to my piano, numb and distraught. I couldn't be who I used to be - a fire dancer, a touring artist, a free spirit - anymore. I had to say goodbye to her. I had to find a new way of being. I had been Fire. Water. Air. Now I had to learn to be Earth.

So I touched the piano - made of wood, and once itself a tree - and I asked it for permission to be something different than I've ever been in my life. Permission to be a tree.

Lyrics:

Give me permission,
Permission to speak
Permission to be
Still as the trees,
Only movement of leaves.

Give me permission,
Permission to stop
Moving about,
Flying around
Over the ground.

Show me how
To slow down.

Chorus:
In sun I'll give you shade.
In drought I'll give you rain.
Shelter you from the sky
I'll dance without want to fly.
Sing in solitude
And bow to plant my roots.
Give me permission to be
The tree that lives in me.

Give me permission
Permission to hold
Seasons so cold
Freezing my love
In clouds above.

I want permission
Permission to say
Everyday
I will STAY.

Show me how
To slow down.
Show me how
To be found.

Chorus

Take the time to never call.
Lay the blame on nothing at all.
Did you even look to see
How far I'd fall?
